E-DAD 2023 logo

10-15 July 2023 - European DAD in Groningen, NL 🇳🇱

Building our magical inaugural DAD program in 2022, we'll return to the charming city of Groningen, aptly known as The City of Talent. The University of Groningen is once again our key partner, hosting the IDD's weeklong program of learning, reflection and content creation for and with experienced peers from the Intercultural, DEI and Global Citizenship Education realms in Europe and beyond.  REGISTRATION IS OPEN

27-30 November 2023 (tbc) - Middle Eastern & African DAD in Cairo, EG 🇪🇬

This will be a launch/pilot edition of our Developing Across Differences program in Cairo. Working with local partners, the event will attempt to span two major regions—both of which are underrepresented in contemporary Differences research and dialogue. We will showcase regional expertise, both established and emerging.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH & MORE

The IDD is premised on the proposition that we can improve our larger impact by understanding where there are (and are not) intersections among four key areas of study and practice in the differences field: —intercultural communication, global learning, anti-discrimination/diversity & inclusion, and global competence— then borrowing from and expanding on them.

The IDD’s inaugural edition of the Developing Across Differences (DAD) Learning Lab and Community Week took place in The Netherlands in June 2022 to support Europe-based practitioners and scholars learn from and with one another within and across the four narratives to increase their effectiveness and impact with their clients and learners.

In 2023, all experienced practitioners and scholars (and those who aspire to the field) are invited to join us for the

North American DAD will run in August 2024.

The right courses for you

Four different types of courses are available depending on your needs

We offer advanced-level* professional development learning opportunities for colleagues who are established in the Differences field as multipliers—whether in corporations (diversity officers), education institutions (faculty, internationalization leaders, teacher educators), government or NGO/humanitarian settings.

*While most of our participants have at least 5 and often 15+ years of experience, we also offer courses for aspiring professionals.

Take a look at the types of courses we offer and contact us if you have questions about what the right options are for you.

Synthesis Courses

These are ‘advanced beginner’ courses. By this we mean that you are already established (5+ years) in at least one of the narratives and want to expand into other Differences narratives.

You will learn about the fundamentals of  intersecting areas in order to begin to incorporate these narratives and/or insights into your work moving forward.

Advanced Core Courses

Designed for you as an experienced (5+ years) practitioner/scholar already established in at least one of the four narratives.

These courses will help you advance your practice/scholarship in this same Differences narrative and further specialize your existing expertise.

Real-World Issues Courses

Whether you are long-experienced or newly entering the field, these courses help you better to apply practices and theories from each of the different narratives in practical ways that help address the challenges you encounter in your work of helping others develop across differences.

Early-to-Mid Career Courses

If you are a colleague who is newer to the field and want to strengthen your abilities as a multiplier in one of the four content areas, these offerings will help you develop further in your chosen specialization.

LABS: CO-CREATE CONTENT

Learn through active experimentation and application

Whether you join us for one day or all six of the DAD, you are invited to take part in multiple “laboratory experiments” in which relevant real-life challenges and critical incidents are interrogated from multiple perspectives.

Together with our faculty and peers, you have the opportunity to contribute insights from your area(s) of expertise, and use appreciative inquiry to explore —and model how to explore— how other narratives might expose different, complementary ways of problem-solving,-minimization, or -prevention.

New cooperations, research concepts, and practices/pedagogies will emerge from the Labs, strengthening each of the individual narratives—and the combinations thereof.

Additional programming

There is so much to discuss in this time of uncertain but necessary transformation for the greater Differences field. We’re pleased to offer additional programming for our Community to discuss together how we can iterate and improve the work we do.

(Complimentary) evening programming, community events and local immersion options are always a part of our DADs.

Learn with Leading Faculty

Faculty from the IDD’s four content areas are exceptional contemporary thinkers, practitioners, and facilitators who use experiential and project-based learning methods to support deeper development.

Established and emerging experts alike, IDD Faculty appreciate local issues and their global implications.

COMMUNITY: (RE)NEW CONNECTIONS

Grow your network

The DAD is for multipliers who help individuals, organizations and societies better recognize, appreciate and use differences as a way of better communicating, working and thriving together.

These are (in-house and external) trainers, educators, consultants, coaches, researchers, scholars, facilitators, HR staff, and professional development specialists who:

1
Lead initiatives within corporations and workplace settings.  e.g. Diversity Officers, Organizational Development Specialists, International/Global Initiatives Managers
2

Support learners and others in education institutions. e.g. Faculty, Equity Coaches, School Heads, International Student Mobility/Internationalisation Officers

3

Are part of civil society organizations.  e.g. Immigrant Support Coordinators, Non-formal Learning Providers, Youth and Education Agencies

4
Initiate and run government programmes  e.g. Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion, Ministry of the Interior

Advise clients of all types e.g. Intercultural and DEI Trainers, Policy Advisors)

6
Otherwise provide support and guidance whenever and wherever differences are present and there is an opportunity to learn from them.

If you help others connect, this opportunity is for you

Need to know more about DAD programme?

Note that these questions and answers apply to the 2023 European edition of the programme.
Once details about the Middle Eastern & African edition are available, we will update accordingly.

About the programme

How much experience do I need to have to attend DAD courses?

While most of our participants have at least 5 (and often 15+) years of experience, each course has a participant profile as determined together with the faculty member(s).

We understand that your circumstances are unique, and if you have questions as to whether you meet the course qualifications, we’re happy to discuss these with you. Email us at info[at]iddifferences.org with your questions or to schedule a brief advisory session.

Although all of our courses offer advanced-level content, we’re also pleased to offer several that have been designed to also include aspiring professionals or those who may be newer to the field.

What is the schedule for the week?

We will have an opening networking session on the afternoon/evening of Sunday, 10 July and courses run from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm, with a closing session on Friday evening.

Optional programming  includes:

  • mini-coaching sessions before class and during the midday lunch break,
  • stimulating evening offers with visiting guests,
  • group lunches,
  • "Buy Your Own" Dinner with Faculty so that you can get to know our experts, and
  • a faculty-led experiential tour of Amsterdam.

Details of the optional programme will be announced beginning in February 2023.

Also see the course schedule.

How many hours can I expect to dedicate to a course per day?

Courses run from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm CET — with breaks and networking opportunities, plus optional programming before and after class time — and one course day is equal to 6 learning contact hours.

There will be optional programming before and after classes. More information will be available in early 2023.

(NB: If you sign up for the Experiential Perspective Taking course, you must be present the day before the course (Monday, 10 July) from 6.00-7.30 pm, as this activity will serve as the foundation for the in-class learning the next day, Tuesday, 11 July.)

How many spots are open per course?

Enrolment is capped at a maximum of 22 places per course.

What kind of certificate do I receive after completing a course?

You will be given a Certificate of Participation listing the number of learning contact hours for each course you complete.

If applicable, you may apply for recognition of these credits to the relevant authorities at your home institution. While final decision on awarding credits is at the discretion of the home institution, we will be happy to provide any necessary information that might be requested in addition to the certificate of participation. (Note that 28 hours corresponds to 1 ECTS.)

Are there take-away materials?

While the biggest take-aways are what you gain in the classroom and with your peers, depending on the faculty member, you may have additional materials provided in digital or paper form.

What language is used in the courses?

For this programme, participants should have enough command of the English language to take part in the discussions and to present their own work in English.

Registration

How do I register for courses?

Registration is managed by our partner, the University of Groningen. To register follow these steps:

On each course page, simply click on ENROLL NOW and you will be redirected to the University of Groningen's registration system to apply for that course.

If you have an EduID account affiliated with a Dutch university, you can enrol using this. If your EduID account is not affiliated with a university in the Netherlands or if you do not have an existing EduID account, you will need to create an account to access the course catalogue.

When will I receive notification that my enrolment in the course has been confirmed?

Once we receive your registration, we will contact you within 3 business days to confirm your eligibility and before your enrolment is official. *"*Please note that since all courses are subject to meeting minimum enrolments, the DAD team will confirm on or before 17 April 2023 that your course is taking place. We strongly advise you not to make non-refundable travel arrangements until you have received this confirmation.

My company will pay for my participation; how do we proceed with the payment?

We will have an opening networking session on the afternoon/evening of Sunday, 10 July, and courses run from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm, with a closing session on Friday evening.

Optional programming includes:

  • mini-coaching sessions before class and during the midday lunch break,
  • stimulating evening offers with visiting guests,
  • group lunches,
  • "Buy Your Own" Dinner with Faculty so that you can get to know our experts, and
  • a faculty-led tour of Amsterdam.

Details of the optional programme will be announced beginning in February 2023.

Also see the course schedule.

What kind of certificate do I receive after completing the courses?

You will be given a Certificate of Participation listing the number of learning contact hours for each course you complete.

If applicable, you may apply for recognition of these credits to the relevant authorities at your home institution. While final decision on awarding credits is at the discretion of the home institution, we will be happy to provide any necessary information that might be requested in addition to the certificate of participation. (Note that 28 hours corresponds to 1 ECTS.)
