FEATURED CASE STUDY
Benchmarking UK Rail: Unifying a Fragmented Industry
See how Inclusion & Belonging experts Apeksha Naik and Odis Palmer are using the GDEIB to create a “universal language” for DEI across 20+ disparate organizations that are in the process of becoming one Great British Railways.
“We needed a universal language to measure best practices across a fragmented sector.”
The Context
Apeksha and Odis serve as the UK railway industry’s Inclusion and Belonging Leads. Together, they co-chair the “Rail Unites for Inclusion” forum, navigating the industry’s complex transition back into the public domain.
The Challenge
- Fragmented organizational structures with varying DEI maturity.
- Sensitivities preventing data sharing between private entities.
- The need for a proven, global standard to unify 20+ rail companies.
The Solution
At the recommendation of Group HR Director at UK Department for Transport Operator (DFTO) Karen Lewis, the team implemented a two-pronged strategy to standardize DEI efforts across the rail network:
1. Practitioner Certification
Apeksha and Odis became GDEIB Certified Practitioners. This provided the “stamp of validity” needed to lead strategic conversations with high-level stakeholders and the Department for Transport.
2. Digital Deployment
Leveraging GDEIB Digital, they deployed a “Pulse” version for frontline workers, “Lite” a version for leaders, and “Standard” versions for DEI experts. This allowed them to capture perception data across vast workforces rapidly.
The Impact
- Unified Reporting: Created a single source of insights for DEI progress across the entire industry.
- Scalability: Successfully benchmarked companies that lacked their own dedicated DEI resources.
- Strategic Shift: Provided evidence for the UK Department for Transport to revisit sector-wide inclusion and belonging efforts guided by the GDEIB Benchmarks.
Measuring progress in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requires more than just good intentions—it requires a validated, global standard.
